  1. About

Jo Royle Outdoor is the oldest independent, technical outdoor store in the Peak District. From humble beginnings as a one-woman operation in a little shop on Buxton Market Place, to the bastion of the Peak District climbing and walking community it has been for decades, Jo Royle has served the people of the Peak District for over 50 years.

In 1972, after Jo quit her job as a teacher, the shop began life just up the road at 22 High Street. Jo, and her husband Brian, quickly outgrew the shop and moved to 7 Market Place in January 1981. In 1975 they opened their second store, ‘The Compleat Mountaineer’ in Hanley, which can only be identified today by an old sign painted on an exterior wall! For over 20 years they built the reputation of the shop; it wasn’t just a place to buy kit but a meeting place for all outdoor enthusiasts, a community united by their love of the outdoors. On Sunday mornings, when the weather was too bad to get out, you would find the shop full of people who had just turned up to see their mates and have a coffee (sometimes provided by a young Andrew Barnes…).

In 2003, Andy and his brother David took over. Seasoned mountaineers, now with a wealth of experience and knowledge under their belts, they furthered what Jo and Brian built. The shop stocked, fitted and maintained ski equipment, technical outdoor clothing and footwear and an abundance of climbing equipment. The shop was renowned for its alpine advice and revered for its local climbing and walking expertise. After over 20 successful years, Andy decided to call it a day in 2025.

Originally the business was going to retire with him, remaining only as a fond memory to the people it had served. But places like Jo Royle cannot be let go. The Peak District is far too big and beautiful a place, at a time when independent shops are becoming fewer and farther between, to lose one of its best outdoor shops. In August 2025 Will took over from Andy. With the help of family, friends, the outdoor industry and the community that has sustained Jo Royle Outdoor for over 5 decades, it will continue as a premier independent outdoor store. A Peak District shop for anyone who wants to get outside and experience the outdoors, whatever the weather and their circumstances.

We hope in 20 years we can look back and say we did Jo, Andy and the people of the Peak District proud x
